I am a fifth year medical student at La Sapienza University (Rome). I really respect the world of volunteering. In the future I would like to offer my medical knowledge to those most in need.
The smile-x course consists of the empathic training of the doctor. it is also called clown-therapy: dressed as clowns you visit hospital departments, especially pediatrics. Role: create a relationship of trust with the patient, cheer up the children.
I spent a month in India as a volunteer in public medical structures and peripheral villages. Main departments attended: gynaecology, paediatrics and cardiology. Role performed: dressing of infections and wounds, injections, distribution of medicines, basic instrumental tests. You learn how to make diagnoses with few resources due to poverty.
Promotion of healthier lifestyles for local residents through many workshops on desease prevention.
Sign language allows you to communicate with a deaf person. It has an important social value as it allows the inclusion of otherwise disadvantaged people. Skills learned: how to interact with a deaf patient in a normal and emergency situation.
La Misericordia is the oldest private voluntary institution for assistance to the sick. Roles performed: stretcher-bearing, transporting patients in ambulances, delivering prepared food to the poor, medical assistance at sporting events and concerts.
