Research Experience

Microstructural Optimization of Polymer Sandwich Panels 

Politecnico di Milano, incollaboration with Innepla S.p.A.

  • Conducted an industry-oriented research project in collaboration with Innepla S.p.A., focusing on the microstructural optimization, numerical modelling, and experimental validation of polymer sandwich panels.
  • Tensile, compression, and three-point bending tests to characterize mechanical properties and
    calibrate constitutive material models.
  • High-fidelity finite element models in Abaqus to evaluate the structural behaviour of innovative
    polymer honeycomb sandwich panels under compression and bending.
  • Nonlinear finite element analyses investigating the influence of geometry, material properties, and
    microstructural design on load-bearing capacity, stiffness, stress distribution, and mechanical
    performance.
  • Calibration and validation of finite element models against experimental results through iterative
    comparison of force–displacement responses.

Master's Thesis — Optimal Sensor Placement for Structural Health Monitoring of
Communication Towers

Politecnico di Milano, in collaboration with EI Towers S.p.A.

  • Conducted an industry-driven research project in collaboration with EI Towers S.p.A. to develop a structural health monitoring (SHM) framework for large-scale communication tower infrastructure.
  • Developed a high-fidelity finite element model of a 80m steel lattice communication tower in SAP2000 and performed comprehensive modal and dynamic analyses, including response spectrum and time-history analyses, to investigate structural dynamics, vibration behaviour, and wind-induced structural response.
  • Developed MATLAB codes to implement and compare optimal sensor placement algorithms, including Effective Independence (EFI), Kinetic Energy (KE), and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), using the appropriate modal and response-based formulations for each method.
  • Evaluated structural response under sixteen realistic damage scenarios using vibration-based monitoring techniques and using Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) and Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for structural condition assessment, damage detection, and localization.
  • Designed and implemented a wireless SHM prototype integrating Raspberry Pi, ESP32, ZigBee communication, and tri-axial accelerometers to support distributed structural monitoring and experimental validation.
  • Developed a practical monitoring workflow for baseline characterization, damage detection, and localization, translating numerical results into a cost-effective sensor deployment strategy for real-world applications.
  • Proposed an optimized sensor layout for long-term monitoring of a real communication tower; the proposed monitoring system is currently being implemented by the industrial partner.

Multidisciplinary Monitoring and Assessment of Unstable Slopes

  • Rainfall-Induced Shallow Landslide Simulation
    Conducted laboratory rainfall-induced landslide experiments using an integrated monitoring approach combining photogrammetry, geological, and geophysical techniques.
  • Processed data from Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), Two-Dimensional Digital Image Correlation (2D-DIC), Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), and optical fiber sensors to monitor slope deformation and failure evolution.
  • Applied the Shallow Landslide Instability Prediction (SLIP) model and compared monitoring techniques to identify the most effective approach for early landslide detection.

Rock Slope Stability Assessment – Orrido di Bellano, Italy

  • Performed multidisciplinary rock slope investigations using geological surveys, Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry, smartphone Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
  • Evaluated rock mass quality and failure mechanisms using Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Geological Strength Index (GSI), and kinematic analysis.
  • Compared conventional field mapping with photogrammetric and remote sensing techniques for discontinuity characterization and rockfall hazard assessment

Rock Slope Stability Assessment Using DEM (3DEC)

  • Developed a three-dimensional DEM model in 3DEC to investigate the stability of fractured rock slopes.
