Dear Admission Committee,
My name is Gaia Aloisio and I am writing to express my deep interest in the Master’s program in International and Transnational Criminal law at the University of Amsterdam.
Growing up in a place like Sicily, a region historically marked by the presence of organized crime, I became really aware of how deeply criminal structures can influence social, economic, and political life.
Witnessing the impact of organized criminal networks on communities strengthened my interest in criminal law and the mechanism through which the state can uphold justice and protect citizens.
It was also when I pursued my bachelor degree in European Studies at the University of Amsterdam, majoring in European Union Law and European Union Politics that I nourished my analytical skills and deepened my understanding of the balance between state power and individual rights, especially in contexts where security concerns intersect with human rights protections. One course in particular excited me the most, which was Fundamental Rights of the European Union, because for the first time I took part in a moot court competition that required drafting written submissions and presenting oral arguments on constitutional rights issues.
My academic exchange year in Boston was my opportunity to take courses that I was not able to find in my current bachelor degree in Amsterdam, like Environmental Law, Human Rights, and International Humanitarian Law, which was my personal favorite since we had the opportunity to practice with moot courts and various group projects.
Alongside my academic studies, I have been actively involved with the Red Cross, an experience that has shaped my understanding of Human rights. In Sicily, where migration flows are a tangible and ongoing reality, volunteering often means assisting migrants upon arrival. Through this work, I witnessed the human dimension behind legal categories such as asylum, irregular status, and international protection. This experience deepened even more my commitment to studying how legal systems can balance state authority with the protection of human dignity.
I am determined to pursue, in the future, a professional path in which I can apply the principles of criminal justice and human rights protection in a meaningful way. I believe that this Master’s program represents the ideal step towards that goal, equipping me with the necessary skills to contribute responsibly to the legal field.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely yours.

Gaia Aloisio
