Summary

Having worked as a journalist for over 30 years interviewing people from all walks of life, these interpersonal skills have given me confidence in a counselling role.

In the two placements it has been a privilege to be able to counsel a diverse range of clients enabling me to build on my skills. An empathetic counselling approach empowers the client to be able to process challenging emotions and issues.

I have a strong command of the ethical issues that counselling brings and embrace diversity treating all clients warmly and without judgment.

  • Have seen seven clients including three male clients in order to diversify my client group experience
  • Issues clients have brought include relationship, work, sexuality and family

Student counsellor placement

Welwyn Hatfield Women's Refuge (WHWR)

  • Counselled 16 clients aged 21 to 65, addressing issues including PTSD, OCD, anxiety, depression and unexpected pregnancy.
  • Established safe, supportive environment using the person-centred approach to foster trust that enabled clients to be heard, some of them for the first time.
  • One client was able to talk about historical sex abuse trauma experienced as a child that had not been revealed to anyone else before. I held her throughout, over several sessions and allowed her to process that trauma in a safe space.
  • Through a connection and empathetic approach I have enabled clients to build their own confidence and believe in themselves, their own inner strength and power within.
  • Several clients sought counselling sessions because of recommendations from other refuge clients.
  • Currently counselling a refuge client online following a request to continue sessions after being forced to leave the refuge without notice after a discovery of location.
